Mix: iSpyBreaks

I was asked to do a guest mix by Dead Famous Records (home of Robosapiens et al) label manager Daniella Downs for the “Dead Radio” show on iBreaks Radio. The deal is I get one in return at some point, so watch out for that… Anyway, I’d intended to do about 45 mins but it came out a shade under 80 and went out on iBreaks in full last Saturday, so I now offer it here as an all too rare burn-to-CD promo mix 🙂

The name, iSpyBreaks, is a pun on iBreaks of course, and a recognition that while most of the tunes here are not exactly what most people would call psybreaks, they are varied representatives of the kind of epic, progressive breaks with tech edges and psy twists that has always been my main squeeze for the past 2 years. Some tunes are new, some are old but were so ahead of their time that they still fit. Hope you enjoy it.

Watchlist updated; Next week’s show

The new Watchlist, where I big up the artists and labels who I consider to be at the forefront of the music I love, has been updated. Congratulations to Amb for earning his place (it’s been long-deserved, but I’ve only recently encountered the full extent of his achievements), and to our four new contenders in the Up & Comers section, well worth keeping an eye on.

I’ve been buying really silly amounts of music lately, mainly as a result of mostly eschewing the new releases in favour of digging around for more by artists and labels that I’ve dug before. If you have hours and hours and hours to spare I highly recommend it 🙂

Anyway, it would appear that most of what’s landed in my download folder this week can be filed under tags such as chunky, funky, rolling, pulsing, throbbing and wobbling, which can only mean one thing: It’s time for a QuexTech Special! So on next week’s BrapFM show on Mon 5th Oct from 20:00 UK time I’ll lock the breakbeat away in a lead-lined box and devote the full 2 hours to the 4/4s. Techno, tech-house, tech-trance. All, of course, guided by my core passion for the progressive, the psychedelic, the synaesthetic.

Take a deep breath in, and…..

It took longer to come up with the above description of last night’s musical journey than it did to transcribe the whole tracklist. I think I did it solely to demonstrate (to myself as much as anyone else) the futility of trying to try to nail down the genres I play, particularly in Tales Of The Interstitial whose stated purpose is to showcase the stuff that doesn’t neatly fit into named boxes. Half the above I patently made-up and won’t mean anything anyway, although if you’re bored you might like to play match-the-genre-description-to-the-tracks, and then I think you’ll find I’ve taken this pointless task very seriously. For all our sakes, I shall not bother doing so again. Instead, I have plans for potentially an even more bizarre but possibly also more useful way of describing my mixes for those who don’t recognise the tracks… ah the mystery, the suspense…

Aaaaanyway, it was another wicked show… thanks everyone for tuning in and egging me on.

I’ll try to add the label responsible for each release into my tracklists from now on alongside artists and titles. However it’s a total PITA because most of the time they don’t put that info in the filename or even the ID3 tag so I have to look it up… useful patterns may emerge from having this info about labels to watch, which will feed into my new watchlist, but if it seems like it’s not worth the time I may stop again. Or try to script it…

Previously on NSB I’ve tended to stick to breaks. Tonight though I decided to loosen that rule: while still centred on psy/tech/elek-breaks, I moved freely out to chill, electro-house, and even a bit of progressive trance. I think it paid off, this was definitely my best and most enjoyable NSB show so far, and the chatroom crew seemed to like it too 🙂 Cheers to everyone who tuned in, and thanks to Ali for asking me to cover.
