Next two weeks swapped on NSB

6 April 2010

Short version: I’m doing next Saturday on NSB (10th April), instead of the one after (17th).

As you ought to know, Quexotic Adventures, my fortnightly show on NSB Radio, is partnered with a show from those brillo Brightonians the Slackers Convention. If you haven’t yet checked it out, I suggest you do: if you share some of my taste in progressive, psybreaks and/or chunky techno, you should find plenty of tasty choons to chew served up by LuQas, Pav and friends.

Anyway, due to various plans, schemes, plots and conspiracies, not to mention those villainous wildcards Happenstance, Serendipity and Inability To Be In Two Places Simultaneously (despite all the advances in quantum chromodynamics), we’re swapping over the 10th and 17th.

So the final schedule for April is:
3rd: Quextal (you missed it, archive here)
10th: Quextal
17th: Slackers
24th: Slackers

Normal flip-flopping pattern resumes in May until further notice!

Watchlist updated; Next week’s show

27 September 2009

The new Watchlist, where I big up the artists and labels who I consider to be at the forefront of the music I love, has been updated. Congratulations to Amb for earning his place (it’s been long-deserved, but I’ve only recently encountered the full extent of his achievements), and to our four new contenders in the Up & Comers section, well worth keeping an eye on.

I’ve been buying really silly amounts of music lately, mainly as a result of mostly eschewing the new releases in favour of digging around for more by artists and labels that I’ve dug before. If you have hours and hours and hours to spare I highly recommend it πŸ™‚

Anyway, it would appear that most of what’s landed in my download folder this week can be filed under tags such as chunky, funky, rolling, pulsing, throbbing and wobbling, which can only mean one thing: It’s time for a QuexTech Special! So on next week’s BrapFM show on Mon 5th Oct from 20:00 UK time I’ll lock the breakbeat away in a lead-lined box and devote the full 2 hours to the 4/4s. Techno, tech-house, tech-trance. All, of course, guided by my core passion for the progressive, the psychedelic, the synaesthetic.

Don’t miss it! Sign up for a reminder!

New show forthcoming on PsyMusic Radio!

11 August 2009

Been a while in the planning this, but I’m delighted to announce that my new twice-a-month show on PsyMusic begins next Tuesday 18th August @ 7pm (UK), and thereafter on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. (Want to join a reminder service?)

The show is called Tales of the Interstitial (all the other PsyMusic shows have strange names, I didn’t want to feel left out…) and every fortnight we’ll be setting sail on a journey across the many faces of psychedelic electronica, floating effortlessly between psybreaks, progressive psytrance, psytechno and psychill, and particularly trying to find the lost chords in the spaces between… in the interstitial

One of the significant differences between this show and the others that I’ve been involved with, is there’s no official finishing time. I plan to do at least 2 hours, but it may be 2.5, 3, 4… it all depends on you, the listeners, to get into the chatroom and bring your influence to bear! On PsyMusic the chatroom is called the ShoutBox and it’s on the forum front page (different to the main homepage of the site), or here’s a bigger version. You need to be registered on the forum to use it (registration is free of course). It looks and feels just like an IRC-based chat (like Brap or NSB), but apparently it isn’t really IRC so you can’t use your own client.

Together we will weave a journey… a story. Let’s make it epic.

“Tales of the Interstitial” starts 7pm on Tuesday 18th August. Tune in via http://www.psymusic.co.uk/ or using this direct link. Don’t forget to join the chatroom too.

Mix: Live on Brap FM 4th May 2009

5 May 2009

Well that was a most enjoyable way to round off a wicked weekend! We kicked off with a load of chunky ‘n’ squelchy techno, tech-house and progressive, before moving into breaks of the phat, techy and progressive flavours for the second hour, and finishing on some phar-out psybreaks. Special shouts to mike, jels and tomski in the chat for all the positive vibes, glad you enjoyed it and hopefully see you again πŸ™‚

Next radio show: Monday 6th October

3 October 2008

Once again Quextal seizes control of the airwaves of Brighton (101.4FM) and the fibreopticwaves of the interfrob (http://brap.fm) this Monday, 8-10pm. This month I have mostly been eating trippy minimal space techno and tech-house, so expect plenty of that, alongside the usual finely-crafted melΓ©e of doof, blurble, fizz, swoosh, thump, wonk and flip-trip-swizzlestick. You knows it.

Tune in, spazz out.

Mix: Live on NSB Radio, 21st July 2008

22 July 2008

My most excellent friend, superstar DJ and now budding co-producer of most excellent tuneage Ali Rutt, asked if I would like to cover his show tonight. Fortunately I’ve been catching up with the tune shopping recently anyway, and I had baskets full of new stuff at DJD and Juno already.

Mostly not breaks though. Breaks releases seem to have dried up a bit of late (while the tech-house and techno proliferate with over 1000 releases a week on DJD alone… mostly of badly produced shite that would never have made it onto vinyl… the cross I must bear for it being easier for me to sell my tunes when I resume production, is to trawl through this great haystack of dross looking for the tiny handful, 10 on a good day, but often just 2 or 3, diamond-tipped needles shining amongst them. It takes hours, so I don’t do it every week, and then suffer the FEAR that I have missed the GREATEST TUNE OF THE YEAR, the one that puts goosebumps the size of molehills in your skin, that sends rushes of colour and sparkles of electricity radiating around and through your whole body…)

I digress. It’s been a while since I’ve played 2 hours of breaks. I tried to bring as much variety as I could within the genre, but it ended up staying on the fairly full-on side of tech-breaks, psy-breaks, electro-prog and glitchy wrongness. All good dirty fun.

In a new development, this show was the first successful test of archiving at a higher quality than the broadcast. The show went out at 96k mono as always (Yes, mono; NSB seems to think it’s 1950), but the download here is at 192k stereo. Yay for darkice, and for my 7-year old PC coping with the extra load. I’ll do this for every show now, unless I get told off. You deserve quality, dear listeners. Your ears are a holy shrine, a temple devoted to music, and they should no more suffer a 96k mono stream than listen to music on AM. In my not very humbly-expressed opinion. The several artists who contacted me to thank me for including them on Late Nite Tech Trip, which is at 192k, suggests that they understand that having their tunes included on high-quality mixes means more people get to hear their tunes, more people like their tunes, more people go and buy their tunes. No-one over the age of 12 is so tight that they’d rip a tune out of a mix instead of buying it, which would be the modern equivalent of making a compilation tape from bits of songs you recorded off Radio 1 and attempted, not very well, to edit out the bit where Bruno Brookes talks over the end.
