Just listening back to this one and frankly, even by my standards, it’s absolutely chock-a-block with awesome tunes, including a load of top-notch promos and unsigned tunes. Psybreaks and progressive breaks all the way this week, with just a cheeky little tangent into techno. There’s a couple of glitches in the recording unfortunately due to broadband flaking out (my only major peeve with darkice is that if it loses the network for too long, it messes up the spool to disk too… there’s no need! I’m changing over to butt soon so hopefully that won’t have the same problem…

Jumped on for a last-minute cover of the Beats & Bobz show for Ben & Lex. In deference to those legends of the Deep South West breaks scene, I aimed to replicate their show’s typical genre distribution (or my impression of it, anyway): roughly 65% breaks, 35% techno, and 110% megarave! There the similarities probably end… well, I just can’t do the West Country accent, moi lover 😉

NB: Because there’s no talking, I’ve filed this under Promo Mixes as well as Radio Archives – but unlike the other promo mixes, it won’t fit onto an audio CD.

An extra rare treat for the first show of 2010… I lost my voice on NYE, so there’s no mic/talkover, I just had to let the music speak for itself… 🙂 Also, as we were all still in the recovery zone from the New Year shenanigans, I pulled back the tempo and kept it deep, techy and rolling for the most part, gradually fattening up towards the end of course 8)

Mix: my last regular show for Void Radio:

Super-Extended 5+ hour marathon!

So after about two years of doing Void Radio slots on BrapFM, I decided to draw it to a close so that I’m not juggling three shows. I’ve enjoyed the freedom that Brap gives to play any genre, and I’m grateful to them and Spoll/OutOfTheVoid for giving me a route in… but the number of listeners tuning in for live broadcasts has always been woeful. It provided me with a good, low pressure introduction to the world of net radio, helped me build my confidence on the mic, and garnered some enthusiastic fans like Mike and Angel, but now I have a show on NSB with regularly 200+ listeners, Brap’s single-figure listener counts seem pointless. I know many more of you enjoyed the archives, but hopefully by dropping the show I’ll have more time to produce promo mixes for the site instead.

So for my last show, I played a wide range of genres, and included plenty of classics and all-time personal favourite tunes. Since there was no show after mine, and I had support in the chatroom, I just kept going, and going… for over 5 hours. So bear in mind the archive is a lot larger than usual…

Yes, my new show has a name! Thanks to everyone who sent in their suggestions, there were some great ones, couldn’t decide between them so went for something completely different 😉

This week’s show featured some proper tripped out nuskool and epic progressive breaks of the style that got me hooked on it in the first place about 9 or 10 years ago (though these tunes are more recent!), some pslinkin psexy psybreaks, and for the final half hour, something that I hope to be exploring more in future, some twisting mind-expanding leftfield neurofunk-esque drum’n’bass. Oh yes indeed. Word.

Mix: iSpyBreaks

I was asked to do a guest mix by Dead Famous Records (home of Robosapiens et al) label manager Daniella Downs for the “Dead Radio” show on iBreaks Radio. The deal is I get one in return at some point, so watch out for that… Anyway, I’d intended to do about 45 mins but it came out a shade under 80 and went out on iBreaks in full last Saturday, so I now offer it here as an all too rare burn-to-CD promo mix 🙂

The name, iSpyBreaks, is a pun on iBreaks of course, and a recognition that while most of the tunes here are not exactly what most people would call psybreaks, they are varied representatives of the kind of epic, progressive breaks with tech edges and psy twists that has always been my main squeeze for the past 2 years. Some tunes are new, some are old but were so ahead of their time that they still fit. Hope you enjoy it.
