Mix: Live on Brap FM

7 July 2008

We kicked off with some classic house, then oscillated around some tech-house, techno and oldskool acid trance, a bit of breaks took us into the wrongcore and psy-wonk midsection, from where we pulled out, via a bit more techno, to finish on the tech-breaks and psy-breaks. Yeah, I’m a genre tart.

Oxjam reminder: Sunday 25th May from 1pm!

18 May 2008

Don’t forget… n e x t w e e k e n d Bank Holiday Sunday 25th May 2008 everyone within a hundred miles of Southampton is instructed to converge on The Hobbit pub in that town at precisely 1pm (don’t be late or you’ll miss my set!) for 12 hours of massive musical mayhem and good times galore.

I’ve been given the honour of starting the proceedings, 1-2 in the afternoon. There will be barbecue there with good food, so no need to have lunch before you come down. You should obviously expect to be dancing for the whole of my set 8-), but then you’ll have worked up a proper appetite and you’ll appreciate that nice charred burger all the more.

Void Party flyer info for 25th May

And of course, it’s all for a good cause: Everyone involved in putting on the party is giving their services and equipment for free, so all proceeds and donations go straight to Oxfam to help those whose need is so unimaginably greater than ours. We get a really great party. They get access to fresh water, or a goat, or emergency rations, and the support of an organisation which continues to campaign for a fairer world, for the rights of the world’s poorest people to clean water, sufficient food, shelter, healthcare, knowledge… the essentials of survival that we take for granted.

Mix: Live on NSB (last minute cover)

28 April 2008

I’d been on standby during Ali Rutt’s show in case he had internet problems. He didn’t, but JoeBot did on the following show, so (despite having had a few beers by that point) I ended up covering for an hour and a half. Many thanks to all the chatroom crew for the positive feedback 🙂

Void Oxjam Alldayer @ The Hobbit 25th May

5 April 2008

I’ll be playing alongside a baker’s dozen of the other finest southcoast DJs at this event, masterminded by those crazy folk over at Out Of The Void. The date and time for your diary is 1pm to 1am on the Bank Holiday Sunday 25th May, and it’s all for charidee, so even if you don’t care about seeing me play, come along anyway. Last year’s event was several metric shedloads of fun, and this one is shaping up to be even more awesome, if such a thing were possible.

Void Oxjam flyer

Exactly what style of music I’ll be playing has yet to be determined… depends on the running order. But whatever it is, you can be sure it’s music for the mind, the heart and the feet, so come ready to dance…

EDIT: I’ll be on first (1pm) so I guess I’d better play something of an uplifting and progressive flavour (breaks/house/trance) rather than spooky techno. Probably.

Mix: Late Nite Tech Trip

3 April 2008

Well. I got back from the pub about midnight, and then instead of going to bed like any normal person who has to be up at 7am next day, I stayed up and did a mix from the CDs I’ve just burned of the minimal techno I bought online yesterday and haven’t listened to yet. I’d inscribed the CD “Techno and/or Minimal” but it now seems the “or” was superfluous. This is not deep, chilled minimal like the middle part of this mix, and neither is it full-on hard stompy techno. It occupies that perfect centre of afterhours music (as far as I’m concerned) where it is equally suited to dancing around the lounge, hipswinging while seated, mild head nodding, or non-motile appreciation in a more horizontal and relaxed position (but definitely not sleep.) Most importantly of course, it progresses, it journeys, it trips, and takes you with it through different places and spaces in your imagination. It is alchemical – by means of sound, it creates images, feelings, sensations. Or, you create, it facilitates. I merely facilitate the facilitation. And I LOVE doing it.

There’s probably a couple of rough edges due to the fact that I was (and am) a bit mullered (could you tell?), I’ve never played these tunes before, and I couldn’t hear very well as I kept the volume low out of respect for my neighbours at this hour. But sod excuses, I managed to blow my own head off repeatedly both during the mix and listening to it back afterwards, so I thought I’d share it with you. Hope you like it, and as always your feedback is always welcome (add a comment or send an email).
