A real treat for you this month as it was my pleasure to welcome Adam Goodlet, aka Re:Creation into the studio for a full live psytrance set, followed by 3 hours of b2b mixing across the psychedelic genres in true Interstitial style. Many thanks to Adam for coming in. I hope you all enjoy the results as much as we did!

We were unfortunately struck by a couple of broadband dropouts – fortunately they occurred either side of Adam’s live set so that’s not interrupted, but it means the evening’s proceedings have ended up split into three chunks. Adam’s selections are in this colour (although all the psyDnB/neurofunk — from Chook & Phace onwards — is from my stash )

Special Guest for Tuesday’s Tales

It’s my huge pleasure to welcome RE:CREATION into the studio for Tales Of The Interstitial this coming Tuesday 16th February.

Adam Goodlet has been known for some years for his top quality psytrance productions as one half of EPHEXIS, but has recently been proving he can create psybreaks of equal distinction as the “Peak” in RMS & PEAK. Now under his solo projects ATOMIC SPECIES and RE:CREATION he’s continuing to push the psychedelic envelope across the genres… so a suitably Interstitial guest then Check out some of his productions over on the Re:Creation Soundcloud.

Mix: Tales Of The Interstitial episode VII:

If you’ve been struggling to get through all the recent 4+ hour shows, you’ll be pleased to hear that this month’s Interstitial clocks in at a mere 3½ Although since I only just posted December’s, you may have quite a lot of catching up to do…

Warning: it starts off very glitchy: I think I inadvertantly lost a few listeners in the first minute who thought there must be a technical problem. Oops. Nope, it’s just a weird intro track from P&G…

After the intro we kick off with two of my latest artist discoveries: dope crunky beats from Opiuo, and blissed out fusion sounds from The Nasha Experience. Then we go delving into the darker, glitchier side of psybreaks and electro for a while. That leads into some techy and progressive 4/4s, before we bring the breaks back on an epic trippy nuskool tip, throwing in some techno and tech-funk for good measure, and finally bringing you down gently with a more chilled dub-tech breakbeat vibe.

Big ups all the Shoutbox crew for their support, especially n0sS – another enthusiastic new convert to Quextal’s Radical Interstitialism See you next time!

Cheers to everyone who tuned in and especially the chatroom crew. We had an enjoyable 3 hour odyssey from breaks to progressive to techno, back to breaks with a few cheeky slabs of darkfloor electro, a smidge of exceptionally rare high-class dubstep, and then an assortment of blissful psychill. For next Tuesday’s Tales of the Interstitial on PsyMusic Radio, I’ll be joined in the studio by rising psybreaks superstar LuQas.

LuQas is Luke Trott from Brighton England. Born and raised in Bristol, he’s been into dance music since around 2000, where friends and family supplied him a constant feed of prog-house mix tapes. By chance he purchased an early Y3K album after spotting a Sasha track and has been into breaks ever since. Not satisfied with being a punter, he bought his first decks in 2001, promoted a successful Brighton breaks night in 2004 and now is rapidly finding his niche as a producer of deep techy noises.

He draws influences from many different genres, particularly psy-trance and techno, and his varied DJ sets reflect this. Now a resident at the awesome night Slackers Convention, he plays regularly to a loyal crazy crowd of Brighton revellers. You can also catch him on NSB Radio every Saturday night where he fronts the Slackers show alongside Pav and Toxic Shock. With tracks signed to Dead Famous, Yellowfinger Communications, Hardplace Records and Future Perfect, LuQas is starting to gain recognition internationally, with forthcoming gigs in Croatia and Prague.

Luke will be bringing along a sackload of full-on psybreaks, and yours truly will be keeping it interstitial with the finest fizzling 4/4s on the flip. Whatever that means.

In the words of my guest: “Rah!!!!!!” Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Take a deep breath in, and…..

psychill – wonky/glitchy midtempo breakbeat – hypnotic techfunk – claustrophobic darkfloor electro – minimal techno/tech-house (spooky/spacey – light/quirky – rolling/bassy – acid/bleepy) – tech-trance – electroglitch – skankin glitch-funk – heavy’n'dope – psylekdubstep – psylekdnb – psybreaks – psytechfunk – progressive psytrance – building and bouncy psytrance – trancey progressive hardhouse classics

It took longer to come up with the above description of last night’s musical journey than it did to transcribe the whole tracklist. I think I did it solely to demonstrate (to myself as much as anyone else) the futility of trying to try to nail down the genres I play, particularly in Tales Of The Interstitial whose stated purpose is to showcase the stuff that doesn’t neatly fit into named boxes. Half the above I patently made-up and won’t mean anything anyway, although if you’re bored you might like to play match-the-genre-description-to-the-tracks, and then I think you’ll find I’ve taken this pointless task very seriously. For all our sakes, I shall not bother doing so again. Instead, I have plans for potentially an even more bizarre but possibly also more useful way of describing my mixes for those who don’t recognise the tracks… ah the mystery, the suspense…

Aaaaanyway, it was another wicked show… thanks everyone for tuning in and egging me on.

I’ll try to add the label responsible for each release into my tracklists from now on alongside artists and titles. However it’s a total PITA because most of the time they don’t put that info in the filename or even the ID3 tag so I have to look it up… useful patterns may emerge from having this info about labels to watch, which will feed into my new watchlist, but if it seems like it’s not worth the time I may stop again. Or try to script it…

Couldn’t have hoped for a better turnout and reaction for the first chapter of my new residency

True to the show’s remit we jumped around the genres, but kept it mostly upbeat for this week, alternating between psybreaks, progressive psytrance and chunky techno most of the way, serving up the dark and the uplifting, the deep, the epic and the glitchy… and finally closing out with some choice dubstep.
