The fact that this is only the second time I ‘ve gone to the trouble of recommending someone else’s mix on this site, should tell you I don’t do so lightly. Frankly it takes a very special mix to motivate me to the effort of writing a post about it!

But there’s no question that this is just such a mix, and who better to deliver it than someone who repeatedly delivers the goods in both his DJ sets and his outstanding productions: Hedflux. From the first few seconds of the opening track, his own Introversion — which, by the way, he has now kindly offered up as a free download — to the blistering finale, we are taken on a beautifully evolving journey whose variety of sounds and landscapes offers a far greater range of stimulants for body and mind than you (or I) might have thought possible from such an apparently narrow focus on one subgenre.

In the past I’ve tended to find the majority of tech-funk rather dull – it often fails to add sufficient interest, rhythmic melody or groove to its instrumentation to make up for its simplistic beat structure (relative to breaks), earning it the nickname “plodstep” among its detractors. But Hedflux has often produced exceptions to this rule, and this is a mix of the exceptions (his and others’); while I might not personally like every single tune on here, there’s no plodding here, no dull moments, which is really saying something when there’s hardly a broken beat in sight for the whole 80 minutes. This is truly the state of the art.

QA is one year old! To celebrate this momentous occasion, we had exclusive tracks from Triple Agent and Re:Creation (thanks guys!), and I rummaged around for some of my favourite breaks tracks of years gone by to play alongside the current and future releases.

A little while after my show finished I went back on to cover as the next DJ had been called away in an emergency (hope all’s ok there AP), so there’s a little bonus mix for you below the main one.

Another epic extended show… I carried on past the end of my allotted 2 hours as someone was supposed to be covering the next show but had said he might be a little bit late. In the end he didn’t turn up until nearly the end of that show, so I ended up doing the full 4 hour double feature. Download this mix, and the recent 5+ hour BrapFM marathon, onto your mp3 player, and you’re equipped with enough first-class choonage to survive almost any journey. Except maybe Eurostar.

Here we’ve got mostly my intoxicating special blend of the fortnight’s finest new releases and backcat discoveries in psybreaks, progressive breaks, neck-tingling nuskool, electrifying electro, twisted tech-breaks… and our first tentative foray on NSB into something that could be described as techno (but it’s Robosapiens so it must be ok). But just for shizzles, around the halfway mark as a kind of interlude we go on a brief tour of some classic oldskool hardcore and jungle techno from 1992-1994ish. This section doesn’t exactly fit with the flow to either side… hopefully this lump of strange-sounding foreign material is sufficiently colourful that you won’t find it too obtrusive…

It took longer to come up with the above description of last night’s musical journey than it did to transcribe the whole tracklist. I think I did it solely to demonstrate (to myself as much as anyone else) the futility of trying to try to nail down the genres I play, particularly in Tales Of The Interstitial whose stated purpose is to showcase the stuff that doesn’t neatly fit into named boxes. Half the above I patently made-up and won’t mean anything anyway, although if you’re bored you might like to play match-the-genre-description-to-the-tracks, and then I think you’ll find I’ve taken this pointless task very seriously. For all our sakes, I shall not bother doing so again. Instead, I have plans for potentially an even more bizarre but possibly also more useful way of describing my mixes for those who don’t recognise the tracks… ah the mystery, the suspense…

Aaaaanyway, it was another wicked show… thanks everyone for tuning in and egging me on.

I’ll try to add the label responsible for each release into my tracklists from now on alongside artists and titles. However it’s a total PITA because most of the time they don’t put that info in the filename or even the ID3 tag so I have to look it up… useful patterns may emerge from having this info about labels to watch, which will feed into my new watchlist, but if it seems like it’s not worth the time I may stop again. Or try to script it…

It’s been far too long since I uploaded a studio mix. Partly this is down to increasing numbers of gigs and radio shows which occupy a large part of my time plying the decks these days. But it’s not as if I haven’t been making studio mixes from time to time, I was just never quite happy enough with them to upload.

Well, time for that to change. If there’s one message I’m receiving loud and clear every time I play out, it’s that there are people out there who are desperate to hear the kind of stuff that I play. Whatever that is! And even if I think a mix is flawed (usually because I think the tune selection could have been better rather than any technical error these days), you’d rather have that, than silence.

So here you are. This mix covers a fairly wide selection from across the spectrum of progressive, psychedelic, tech and electro flavoured breakbeats that float my boat. It’s plainly more of a home or car listening CD than the sort of journey I would construct at a club or festival, but it should take you to some interesting places. Enjoy
