Here’s something a little different for you… laidback deep and progressive dnb, minimal to liquid, designed to soundtrack a sunny day. I didn’t plan it this way (well, I didn’t plan it at all, I never do…) but it’s ended up dominated by just two recently-released EPs: New Blood 010 on Med School, and Lm1′s Blue Mountain EP on Offworld. But perhaps the fact that I’ve built almost a whole mix from them just serves to highlight the quality and variety on offer from those labels at the moment. Between this sort of thing and the twisted psychedelic techstep and neurofunk I’ve been pushing on my shows for a while, the prospects are looking good for a renaissance of inventive and beautiful dnb this year… as is the case with breaks. This is shaping up to be an amazing year of breaking new ground with the broken beat.

I was asked to do a guest mix by Dead Famous Records (home of Robosapiens et al) label manager Daniella Downs for the “Dead Radio” show on iBreaks Radio. The deal is I get one in return at some point, so watch out for that… Anyway, I’d intended to do about 45 mins but it came out a shade under 80 and went out on iBreaks in full last Saturday, so I now offer it here as an all too rare burn-to-CD promo mix

The name, iSpyBreaks, is a pun on iBreaks of course, and a recognition that while most of the tunes here are not exactly what most people would call psybreaks, they are varied representatives of the kind of epic, progressive breaks with tech edges and psy twists that has always been my main squeeze for the past 2 years. Some tunes are new, some are old but were so ahead of their time that they still fit. Hope you enjoy it.

It’s been far too long since I uploaded a studio mix. Partly this is down to increasing numbers of gigs and radio shows which occupy a large part of my time plying the decks these days. But it’s not as if I haven’t been making studio mixes from time to time, I was just never quite happy enough with them to upload.

Well, time for that to change. If there’s one message I’m receiving loud and clear every time I play out, it’s that there are people out there who are desperate to hear the kind of stuff that I play. Whatever that is! And even if I think a mix is flawed (usually because I think the tune selection could have been better rather than any technical error these days), you’d rather have that, than silence.

So here you are. This mix covers a fairly wide selection from across the spectrum of progressive, psychedelic, tech and electro flavoured breakbeats that float my boat. It’s plainly more of a home or car listening CD than the sort of journey I would construct at a club or festival, but it should take you to some interesting places. Enjoy

Well. I got back from the pub about midnight, and then instead of going to bed like any normal person who has to be up at 7am next day, I stayed up and did a mix from the CDs I’ve just burned of the minimal techno I bought online yesterday and haven’t listened to yet. I’d inscribed the CD “Techno and/or Minimal” but it now seems the “or” was superfluous. This is not deep, chilled minimal like the middle part of this mix, and neither is it full-on hard stompy techno. It occupies that perfect centre of afterhours music (as far as I’m concerned) where it is equally suited to dancing around the lounge, hipswinging while seated, mild head nodding, or non-motile appreciation in a more horizontal and relaxed position (but definitely not sleep.) Most importantly of course, it progresses, it journeys, it trips, and takes you with it through different places and spaces in your imagination. It is alchemical – by means of sound, it creates images, feelings, sensations. Or, you create, it facilitates. I merely facilitate the facilitation. And I LOVE doing it.

There’s probably a couple of rough edges due to the fact that I was (and am) a bit mullered (could you tell?), I’ve never played these tunes before, and I couldn’t hear very well as I kept the volume low out of respect for my neighbours at this hour. But sod excuses, I managed to blow my own head off repeatedly both during the mix and listening to it back afterwards, so I thought I’d share it with you.
